Become a Mentor with Aroa STET

Support a child or young person to rebuild confidence and reconnect with learning, at a pace that works for them.

Our Specialist Therapeutic Education Team work one to one with children and young people who are educated through EOTIS/C, or who are currently unable to attend school. The work is built on trusting relationships, patience and a trauma-informed approach, supporting each young person to recover from burnout and reconnect with learning in their own time.

You do not need to be a qualified teacher. What matters most is that you are warm, reliable and resilient, with personal or professional experience of SEND, and the ability to build genuine, lasting relationships.

Every young person is different, so no two mentoring relationships look the same. In general, the role means:

One to one mentoring

Working directly with a young person in the community or in their home, always at their pace.

A relational approach

Trauma-informed and built on trust, patience and consistency rather than pressure.

Flexible working

Fitting around each young person’s needs, readiness and the plan agreed with their family.

Part of a team

You are never on your own, with regular supervision and a supportive team around you.

To keep the children and young people we work with safe, every mentor needs:

  • An enhanced DBS check, on the update service where possible
  • Safeguarding training, which we also provide in-house
  • A full, valid UK driving licence
  • Valid business insurance
  • A commitment to ongoing supervision and training
  • Public liability insurance

In-house training

Up to date training in autism, PDA and autistic burnout, alongside safeguarding.

Regular supervision

One to one and team supervision sessions, so you always have somewhere to bring things.

Ongoing development

Continuous professional development opportunities as you grow in the role.
